Advantages of FRP Ladders :

Earlier, ladders were mainly made up of bamboo and wood. However, nowadays, FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and aluminum have come up as the ladder making materials. Each of the two materials has its own distinct merits and limitations. Aluminum has been appreciated as an excellent material for making ladders. However, FRP has certain features, which makes FRP ladders more suitable to be used in industrial sectors. This article outlines the prominent differences between aluminum ladders and FRP ladders.

Strength:
One of the major differences between FRP ladders and aluminum ladders is in terms of their strength. As compared to ladders made up of aluminum, FRP ladders are far stronger. It is not that steps of aluminum are not strong; the strength is based on the material’s grade. A ladder that has been made up of low grade aluminum can bend very easily. On the other hand, an FRP ladder can crack when subjected to excessive load.

Resistance to Weather:
Another significant difference is in terms of resistance to climatic conditions. Unlike ladders made of aluminum, FRP ladders have an outstanding resistance for harsh weather conditions. This feature allows FRP ladders to be used outdoors and places commonly affected by severe weather conditions.

Resistance to Electricity:
FRP has a high resistance for electricity. On the other hand, aluminum is an excellent conductor of electricity. As FRP ladders do not conduct electricity, they are widely used in electrical industries, substations and other areas where workers need to work around power lines.

Resistance to Fire:
Fiberglass is more flame resistant as compared to aluminum. Hence, aluminum ladders are commonly used by firefighters and in industrial environments that involve very high temperatures. When it comes to heat conductivity, aluminum is a good conductor of heat, whereas FRP does not conduct heat. When subjected to heat, ladders made up of aluminum lose their strength. This may make it difficult for the user to use the ladder. On the contrary, ladders of fibreglass do not weaken when subjected to heat.

Resistance to Corrosion:

FRP is highly resistant to various corrosive chemicals. Industrial environments usually have many corrosive chemicals that can corrode aluminum and other metals. On the other hand, fiberglass ladders are not at all corroded by these chemicals. Hence, FRP is the material of choice for making ladders to be used in such environments.

Weight:
When it comes to weight, aluminum ladders have a lower weight as compared to FRP ladders. You can easily carry ladders made of aluminum. FRP ladders are not suitable to be used in the form of long extension ladders. Furthermore, steps of fiberglass are more expensive as compared to aluminum ladders.
